Gisozi Genocide Memorial

Inaugurated on the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, the Kigali Genocide Memorial in suburban Gisozi stands on a site where about 250,000 victims were buried, and it documents the events of 1994 in sobering and powerful detail.

Other historic landmarks include the Museum of Natural History, which opened in 2007 in a handsome residence built exactly a century earlier by Dr Richard Kandt, the founder ofmodern Kigali.

Lake Kivu Activities

Africa’s fourth largest lake is located in Western Rwanda, and serves as a border between DR Congo and Rwanda.  Lake Kivu is part of the Great Lake System and lies within the Albertine Rift.  Lake Kivu has a rough, jagged coast and contains numerous islands.

A few resort towns are located on the banks of the lake.  Lake Kivu is the perfect place to relax and take in some sun.

Less than an hours drive from Volcanoes National Park is Gisenyi, a lovely lakeside beach town.  Gisenyi is set on a sandy beach lined with swaying palms, modern hotels and has a tropical atmosphere.

The beaches around Gisenyi are perfect for swimming, boat rides and a variety of water sports.  Watersports available on Lake Kivu include windsurfing, hobie cats catamarans and kayaking.

Tea Plantations

The high altitude, volcanic soils and steep slopes are perfect for growing tea, and indeed it is Rwanda’s number one export.   The quality of Rwandan green tea leaves is among the best in the world. The tea regions are picturesque, with rolling green hills, often covered in clouds.

Visitors can visit tea plantations, see how the tea is picked in the field, how it is fermented at perfect temperatures which turns it from green to brown and how tea companies are working with international ones to become certified organic and other sustainable initiatives.  Of course the highlight of any tea tour is tasting the worlds’ best!
