Kwita Izina Community projects launched |
On
Wednesday June 11th 2008, the Rwanda Office of Tourism
and National Parks (ORTPN) will launch some of the
projects that were realized from funds raised from
the past gorilla naming ceremonies.
While inaugurating the Nyabitsinde School in Kinigi,
the Director General Rosette Rugamba said, “By
celebrating Kwita Izina, we are celebrating incredible
successes in the conservation of the mountain gorilla
and the continued partnership with the community that
plays host to the gorillas.”

High profile Conference on Conservation during Kwita
Izina celebrations |
| For
the first time, as part of Kwita Izina celebrations,
over 150 conservationists, researchers and development
partners worldwide are expected to converge and attend
a high profile conference on June 19th 2008 at Hotel
Novotel. The Conference will be used a platform to
raise the profile of conservation and protected areas
in Rwanda and will focus on the importance of knowledge
based approaches for the long term conservation of
our wildlife.

The mountain Gorillas share with the human beings
98% of the genes and about a third of the world’s
total mountain gorilla’s population live in
Rwanda. The Rwanda Office of Tourism and National
Park (ORTPN) and indeed the entire Rwandan community
found it pertinent to extend the much cherished secular
Rwandan tradition of naming every new born baby to
the Gorillas as well.

The World’s only surviving Mountain Gorilla twins
turn 4years |
|
There is more reason for celebration on 20th May 2008
as the world’s only surviving gorilla twins; Byishimo
and Impano, turn 4years. Born to Nyabyitondere, the
now juvenile and healthy looking twins are not only
a subject of interest to scientists but also the centre
of attraction in the Susa family of gorillas.
